No Worries

Surprisingly, it didn’t take Ethan long to contact me for another date a few days later. He didn’t tell me where we’d be heading, but he did say that I should “dress comfortably.”

So on Saturday morning, dressed in a loose blouse and my favorite denim shorts and black flats, I waited outside my apartment for Ethan to arrive. It was mid afternoon. The sun was shining and the sky was a brilliant shade of baby blue. It was one of those perfect days in L.A. that reminded me of why I’d stayed out here after college.

The nerves I had felt before our first date were gone, and honestly it gave me much more confidence to be wearing something more casual than the slinky red cowl-neck I had on the other night. In fact, I was even excited. The fact that he’d said to “dress comfortably,” added to the potential for adventure.

Besides, I could rest easy in the knowledge that our second date couldn’t possibly as awkward as the formal dining experience we had on our first outing.

Though, in a way, I was grateful for that little bit of awkwardness, since it only made our kiss at the taco truck feel more special. It hadn’t been a kiss of lusty passion, like we’d shared when we were still pretending to be strangers, but something else. Something sweeter. Something I wanted to enjoy regularly.

Ethan opening up to me and acting more like his genuine self filled me with a sense of bittersweet nostalgia.

I wanted to see more of that Ethan.

But if the previous date was any indication, it felt a bit like I might be rolling the dice with the version of Ethan that showed up on any given day. I did my best to shake the worries away. After all, I’d resolved to go with the flow, and take things one day at a time, hadn’t I?

A loud honk startled me. A few yards down the street, a silver compact car sat idling next to the sidewalk. I squinted to see Ethan waving at me from the driver’s seat. A sudden rush of embarrassment washed over me. I hadn’t even bothered to notice the car since I had assumed that Ethan would arrive in the black Mercedes driven by Manny. Either that or a flashy sports car.

One dinner at a pretentious Hollywood restaurant and I was already becoming some kind of entitled lizard lady?

Pull yourself back to reality, Sierra!

I made a light jog over to the car, opened the passenger side door, and hopped in. I buckled myself in, turning to Ethan.

“Hi Ethan, sorry, I was—”

His lips were suddenly pressed against mine. His hand slid up the side of my neck and behind my head, pulling me in and deepening the kiss. I melted into his embrace, a wet heat coiling between my legs. When Ethan finally pulled away, he licked his lips, sending a shiver up my spine. I would definitely call that going with the flow.

“I’ve missed you, Sierra.
